Police in Peshawar say the central command system of the Peshawar Safe City Project has been connected to drone and anti-drone technology, a move meant to strengthen surveillance and security. Police officials made the announcement on Wednesday.
Officials described the arrangement as the first time in Pakistan that a drone unit and an anti-drone system have been integrated with a Safe City project. They said it would let authorities track drone activity and respond more effectively to possible security threats.
Anti-drone system to monitor airspace across districts
The anti-drone component will watch every drone flying within its radar range, which extends up to five kilometres, and will generate automatic alerts. Any suspicious drone movement will immediately notify the Safe City control room.
Police said the integration will allow round-the-clock aerial monitoring of sensitive sites, traffic and criminal activity. The drone surveillance system is also expected to operate in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, in addition to Peshawar.
Authorities expect the technology to help them spot suspicious activity and potential terrorist threats in good time. Live feeds from Safe City drones will allow officials to watch field operations directly, and the system will also provide operational support to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), police officials added.
Hassan Khel police post attack foiled
Earlier, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) said police had foiled an attack by more than 30 terrorists on a police post in Hassan Khel, Peshawar.
The CCPO said the militants targeted the Speen Mela police post from two directions, using heavy weapons in an assault launched from the Moosazai Dara side. He said 16 Peshawar police personnel mounted strong resistance and repelled the attackers.
The CCPO added that the terrorists had also brought an improvised explosive device (IED), which police personnel defused. One police officer was martyred and three others were injured in the incident, according to the CCPO.
