Deadly Clashes Near US Consulate in Karachi Leave Six Protesters Killed

At least six individuals lost their lives and several others sustained injuries during intense protests that erupted near the United States Consulate in Karachi. The unrest unfolded on Mai Kolachi Road, a major artery in the city, where demonstrators gathered to express their outrage following the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in strikes allegedly carried out jointly by US and Israeli forces.

The situation quickly escalated as law enforcement agencies attempted to disperse the crowd using teargas and baton charges. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes with protesters clashing fiercely against police personnel, leading to a breakdown of order in the vicinity of the consulate. Hospital sources confirmed that at least eighteen people were injured in the confrontations, with some in critical condition.

In response to the violent outbreak, authorities took swift measures to contain the unrest and prevent further casualties. Key roads connecting Sultanabad to Mai Kolachi were temporarily shut down to restrict movement, while traffic from the nearby Jinnah Bridge was diverted through I.I. Chundrigar Road. These steps aimed to ease congestion and allow security forces to regain control of the area.

Officials have strongly advised residents and commuters to avoid the affected zones until the situation stabilizes. Security personnel remain deployed in large numbers around the consulate and surrounding neighborhoods to maintain law and order. The protests reflect the heightened regional tensions following the assassination, which has sparked widespread condemnation and unrest across various parts of Pakistan.

It is worth noting that Karachi, as Pakistan’s largest metropolis and economic hub, has witnessed similar demonstrations in the past whenever geopolitical developments have inflamed public sentiment. The current episode underscores the fragile security environment and the challenges faced by authorities in managing politically charged protests while safeguarding diplomatic missions.
