SPARCO Predicts Eidul Adha May Fall on May 27 in Pakistan

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SPARCO) has projected that the new moon marking the start of the Islamic month of Zilhajj will likely be sighted on May 17, 2026. This prediction implies that Eidul Adha could be observed on May 27 across the country.

SPARCO detailed that the new moon of Zilhajj 1447 Hijri is expected to be born at 1:01 am Pakistan Standard Time on May 17. At sunset that day, the moon’s age will be approximately 18 hours and 30 minutes. Additionally, the time interval between sunset and moonset along Pakistan’s coastal regions is estimated to be around 60 minutes.

Given these astronomical conditions, the agency considers the chances of sighting the Zilhajj moon on the evening of May 17 to be favorable, assuming clear weather and good visibility near the horizon. Consequently, the first day of Zilhajj is anticipated to begin on Monday, May 18, marking the conclusion of the Islamic month of Ziqad.

In a significant development, SPARCO indicated that Eidul Adha is expected to fall on May 27 this year. However, the agency emphasized that the definitive announcement regarding the moon sighting and the start of the new Islamic month will be made by Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. This decision will depend on credible testimonies and verified moon observations collected nationwide.
