In a tragic incident on Saturday, two children lost their lives after drowning in a water-filled pit located on a vacant plot in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Memar neighborhood. The site of the accident was Dhani Bakhsh Goth, near the SITE Super Highway area.
The children were reportedly bathing in the accumulated rainwater or groundwater within the pit, seeking relief from the intense heat, when the mishap occurred. Upon receiving the distress call, police and volunteers from the Chhipa welfare organization promptly arrived at the scene.
Local residents, with the assistance of rescue workers, managed to retrieve the bodies from the pit and transported them to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for further procedures. The victims were identified as 11-year-old Waseem, son of Siddiq, and 10-year-old Mohammad Zeeshan, son of Amir Mohammad, both residents of the same locality.
Authorities noted that the vacant plot lacked a boundary wall and did not have a watchman on duty. Efforts are underway to locate the owner of the property. A police official highlighted that the owner’s negligence and failure to secure the plot constitute a legal offense.
Law enforcement officials stated that a case will be registered, and the owner could face arrest if the families of the victims decide to pursue legal action. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continues.
