Around 3,000 runners and cycling enthusiasts took part in the Himmel Pinktober Run across Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad on Saturday. The event aimed to raise awareness of breast cancer and support fundraising for the cause.

Organised by Sports In Pakistan, the event was held at the same time in all three cities. Its organisers said it was meant to bring fitness enthusiasts and running communities together to promote awareness, early detection and timely medical consultation.

Runs and cycling events held in three cities

The main event took place at DHA Phase 8 in Karachi. Participants in Lahore gathered at Bagh-e-Jinnah, while those in Islamabad took part at the Sports Complex.

The programme included 5km and 10km runs and a 20km cycling event. Participants in the Karachi Distance Series also had the option of a special 30km run.

Organisers hope sport will spark wider conversation

The organisers said they wanted to use the popularity of running and community sports to start conversations about breast cancer. They also hoped to stress the value of detecting the disease early and seeking medical advice on time.

Shoaib Nizami, CEO of Sports In Pakistan, said that bringing around 3,000 people together across three cities for a shared cause was encouraging. He said the event was about more than sport, describing it as a way to spread awareness, show solidarity with people affected by breast cancer and show how sporting communities can contribute to society.

Nizami said the organisers hoped the initiative would prompt more discussion about awareness, early detection and medical consultation. He thanked participants and said everyone had helped spread an important message, regardless of the distance they covered.

Sports In Pakistan plans further community initiatives

Sports In Pakistan said it intends to keep using sporting initiatives to encourage community engagement, raise awareness and create a positive social impact. The organisers said the Pinktober Run was designed to build solidarity with people affected by breast cancer.
