Savannah Guthrie Returns to NBC’s Today After Mother’s Kidnapping

Savannah Guthrie, the US television journalist, made her return to NBC’s Today show on Monday, more than two months after her 84-year-old mother disappeared in an unresolved abduction near Tucson, Arizona. Broadcasting live from the Manhattan studio at 7 a.m., Guthrie began with major headlines including the US conflict with Iran and the Artemis II astronauts’ mission to the far side of the moon.

Notably, she briefly addressed her recent absence, expressing gratitude to viewers. “We are so glad you started your week with us, and it is good to be home,” she said. Her co-anchor, Craig Melvin, warmly welcomed her back, gently patting her hand and saying, “Yes, it is good to have you back at home.” Guthrie then transitioned into the news with determination, stating, “Well, here we go, ready or not, let’s do the news.”

Guthrie had last appeared on air in January, shortly before her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was taken from her residence. Surveillance footage captured an armed individual wearing a ski mask tampering with the doorbell camera prior to the disappearance. Following the incident, Savannah and her siblings made emotional public appeals for Nancy’s safe return, offering a $1 million reward. Despite these efforts, Nancy Guthrie remains missing.

In a poignant video recorded in February, Savannah Guthrie conveyed her family’s fragile hope, saying they were “blowing on the embers of hope” that Nancy was still alive, while also acknowledging the painful possibility that she may no longer be alive.
