A magnitude 7 earthquake struck China’s southwestern region of Tibet on Thursday night, killing 16 people and injuring 32, the state news agency said. The agency cited the emergency management bureau in Nagqu City for the figures.

The quake was recorded at about 10:33 p.m. (1433 GMT). Of the injured, 11 were in serious condition and 21 had minor injuries, the agency added.

Emergency response and damage near the epicentre

Authorities activated a level-II earthquake disaster emergency response in the area. The US Geological Survey said the epicentre lay in a mountainous area about 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 kilometres northeast of the regional capital Lhasa.

Local authorities found at least two injured people in a village near the epicentre, according to the agency. Some houses in the villages closest to the epicentre showed cracks. Videos released by local official media showed residents leaving their homes and sheltering outside or in cars parked on the street.

The earthquake is the strongest to hit China since January 2024.
