Microsoft to End Support for Outlook Lite on May 25, 2024

Microsoft has announced that its Outlook Lite application will cease functioning after May 25, 2024. Following this date, users will lose access to their mailboxes through the Lite app as part of the company’s strategy to consolidate its email services into the primary Outlook Mobile app.

Outlook Lite was originally developed to serve users with low-powered Android devices, offering a lightweight alternative to the full Outlook experience. However, the app was officially retired in October 2023, with existing users granted limited access until the final shutdown in May. After this deadline, the app will remain on devices but will no longer support essential functions such as email retrieval and navigation.

Microsoft has assured users that their data—including emails, calendar entries, and attachments—will remain secure and accessible once they transition to Outlook Mobile. Although the exact number of users impacted by this change is not specified, the move primarily affects those with older or less capable smartphones. Notably, new installations of Outlook Lite have been blocked for several months leading up to this phase-out.

To facilitate a smooth transition, Microsoft has integrated an in-app upgrade feature within Outlook Lite that directs users to download Outlook Mobile from the Google Play Store. This consolidation aims to improve overall security and streamline the mobile email experience by focusing development efforts on a single, more advanced platform.

Users are strongly encouraged to verify their device compatibility and switch to Outlook Mobile before the May 25 deadline to prevent any disruption in their email service.
