Three foreign nationals have been arrested and charged in the United States over an alleged scheme that used artificial intelligence to impersonate corporate chief executives and attorneys. An indictment newly unsealed by the US Department of Justice says the scheme stole over $100m.

Suspects named and alleged AI methods

A press release from the US attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York named the suspects as Jacob Soall, Sharon Hazan and Guy Sheetrit. Prosecutors said they used AI to alter and mimic the voices and images of executives and attorneys at several companies. The aim, it said, was to persuade employees to send large payments.

Arrests in Spain and the United Kingdom

Soall and Hazan were arrested in Spain over the summer, while Sheetrit was arrested in the United Kingdom in September. The alleged fraud took place between 2024 and 2026.
