Saqlain Mushtaq Analyzes Shadab Khan’s Struggles in Pakistan’s T20 Lineup

Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq recently shared his insights on the performance challenges faced by Shadab Khan during Pakistan’s campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Drawing from his extensive experience in international cricket, Saqlain pointed out that within the current squad, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz stand out as the only genuine all-rounders capable of contributing significantly with both bat and ball in the fast-paced T20 format.

He elaborated that while emerging talents like Usman Tariq and Abrar Ahmed have shown promise as specialist bowlers, they do not offer the multi-dimensional skill set that modern T20 cricket demands. This format increasingly favors players who can influence the game in multiple facets, especially under the intense pressure of global tournaments. Saqlain emphasized that the ability to balance batting and bowling responsibilities is a rare and valuable asset, which Shadab and Nawaz possess.

Furthermore, Saqlain shed light on the expectations placed on these all-rounders by the team’s head coach, Mike Hesson. He suggested that the coaching staff anticipated consistent and balanced contributions from both Shadab and Nawaz across disciplines. However, Saqlain stressed the importance of clearly defining player roles, noting that teams often distinguish between bowling all-rounders and batting all-rounders to optimize performance. Without this clarity, players may struggle to deliver their best.

Despite their potential, Saqlain expressed concern that Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz were not deployed effectively throughout the tournament. He argued that tactical missteps and mismanagement of their roles limited their impact on crucial matches. This underutilization, him, might have hindered Pakistan’s overall performance in the T20 World Cup 2026.

His observations contribute to an ongoing conversation about Pakistan’s team composition and strategic planning in T20 cricket. The debate centers on how best to harness the skills of versatile players like Shadab and Nawaz, ensuring they are given roles that maximize their strengths. As Pakistan looks ahead to future tournaments, addressing these tactical nuances could prove vital for improving their competitiveness on the world stage.
