Liverpool Sporting Director Richard Hughes Resigns After Transfer Window

Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes has resigned from his position after a two-year tenure, the club announced on Saturday. His departure comes as the Premier League side, currently fifth in the table, navigates the post-Juergen Klopp era.

Hughes, who joined Liverpool from Bournemouth, informed the club’s ownership of his intention to pursue new challenges after successfully guiding the team to the 2024-25 league title and securing Champions League qualification the following season.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon praised Hughes’ contributions, stating that he took charge during a period of significant change, leading football operations, managing recruitment, and supporting the coaching staff. Gordon emphasized that the achievements during Hughes’ time reflect his valuable input, while also respecting his personal decision to step down and wishing him well in future endeavors.

One of Hughes’ notable decisions was appointing Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor, a move that quickly yielded success with a Premier League championship in Slot’s first season. Hughes also spearheaded an ambitious transfer strategy, bringing in high-profile players such as Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike, as Liverpool invested heavily to maintain competitiveness at the top level.

However, his tenure faced criticism, with concerns raised about squad balance and depth despite the significant spending. The 2025-26 season proved challenging, leading to scrutiny over some costly recruitment choices. This culminated in Slot’s dismissal as the club struggled to defend their title and fought to secure Champions League qualification.

Hughes has been linked with a potential move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal. Reflecting on his time at Anfield, he expressed gratitude, saying it was a source of immense pride to serve such a unique institution, an opportunity he will always cherish.
