Emilio Gay Set to Debut as England Revamps Squad for New Zealand Tests

England has decided to omit opener Zak Crawley from the squad and is poised to introduce Emilio Gay as Ben Duckett’s new opening partner for the forthcoming Test series against New Zealand. This move marks the onset of a rebuilding phase following England’s disappointing performance in the Ashes series in Australia.

Durham’s Emilio Gay earned his selection after a standout County Championship season, where he notched three centuries. Alongside Gay, uncapped fast bowler Sonny Baker and wicketkeeper-batter James Rew have been named in the squad. Additionally, seamer Ollie Robinson returns to the Test arena after a two-year hiatus.

England will host New Zealand for a three-match Test series in June, which will be followed by a white-ball series against India and then three Tests against Pakistan later in the summer.

Notably, former vice-captain Ollie Pope, who was dropped during the Ashes, has not been recalled. Crawley missed out due to a lack of form in the ongoing County Championship season. Despite recent injuries, fast bowler Gus Atkinson has been included after sustaining two helmet blows while batting for Surrey against Nottinghamshire.

England’s pace attack will also be without Jofra Archer, who is currently participating in the IPL, opening the door for Baker’s inclusion. Seamer Matthew Fisher retains his place after being part of the Ashes squad.

The squad reflects a new direction under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum as England prepares for a busy home season starting at Lord’s on June 4.

England men’s managing director Rob Key praised Ollie Robinson’s return, highlighting his potential to lead the bowling attack. Key remarked, “When he’s fit and bowling at around 82 or 83 miles per hour, he is world-class. Statistically, his record ranks among the best bowlers globally.”

Key also suggested that captain Stokes might take the new ball more frequently in the upcoming series as England aims to manage its bowling resources differently following the Ashes defeat.

The England squad for the New Zealand series includes: Ben Stokes (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, James Rew, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, and Josh Tongue.
