Daniel Ballard was dismissed after pulling the hair of Tolu Arokodare during Sunderland’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. This red card marks the second time a defender has been sent off for a similar offense in the Premier League this season, following Michael Keane’s January dismissal for Everton, which resulted in a three-match ban for violent conduct.
The incident took place in the first half when Ballard was contesting a high ball with Arokodare. The defender appeared to grab and pull the Nigerian striker’s hair, causing Arokodare to fall while holding his head. Referee Paul Tierney reviewed the play on the pitchside monitor before issuing a straight red card to Ballard.
Despite Sunderland taking an early lead through Nordi Mukiele, they were reduced to ten men in the 24th minute. Meanwhile, Wolves, who have already been relegated, took advantage in the second half as Hugo Bueno scored an equalizer in the 54th minute.
Bueno’s goal ended Wolves’ three-match scoring drought and earned them their first point since March. Sunderland, on the other hand, were left to regret missed opportunities after surrendering their lead.
