Brazilian Midfielder Oscar Retires at 34 Due to Heart Condition

Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34, citing persistent cardiac health problems. His current club, Sao Paulo, confirmed the news on Saturday, marking the end of a career that spanned several continents and top leagues.

Oscar’s health issues came to light in November when he was hospitalized for five days due to cardiac complications. Subsequent thorough medical examinations diagnosed him with vasovagal syncope, a condition characterized by sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure, often leading to fainting. This diagnosis ultimately forced him to reconsider his playing future despite being under contract with Sao Paulo until 2027.

In a heartfelt message shared on the club’s social media channels, Oscar expressed his disappointment at having to retire earlier than he hoped. He reflected on his desire to contribute more on the pitch for Sao Paulo, emphasizing that he still felt capable both in terms of skill and age. However, the health concerns made continuing his career impossible. He also pledged to remain a supporter of the club, transitioning from player to fan.

Oscar’s football journey has been notable, with significant achievements including winning the Premier League twice during his time at Chelsea and securing three Chinese Super League titles with Shanghai Port. In December 2024, he made a sentimental return to Sao Paulo, the club where he began his career, signing a three-year contract. His retirement marks the close of a distinguished career that took him across the globe and left a lasting impact at every stop.
