Former Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim has defended batter Babar Azam, voicing disappointment at the intense criticism he faces from sections of the country’s cricket community, including fans and former cricketers. Wasim made his views known in a social media post dated October 31, 2026.
Wasim said Azam’s contribution to Pakistan cricket should not be overlooked because of a temporary dip in form. He described the right-handed batter as a superstar and one of the finest one-day international players the country has produced, pointing to his consistency, achievements and nearly a decade of high-level performances.
Wasim urges criticism focused on cricket
Wasim acknowledged that Azam’s recent form and performances are open to scrutiny. However, he said criticism should remain centred on cricketing matters rather than turning into personal attacks.
He argued that genuine analysis should address technical shortcomings and areas for improvement, not target individuals for publicity or personal motives. “Nobody is above criticism,” he said, but he warned against “disguising personal agendas, jealousy and character assassination as cricketing analysis.”
Call to celebrate Pakistan’s established stars
Wasim said he failed to understand the level of criticism Azam faces from his own supporters and former cricketers. He added that Pakistan’s cricketing culture should encourage and appreciate its top performers rather than undermine them during difficult periods.
His remarks have once again brought the debate over Azam’s form, performances and treatment by the cricketing fraternity into focus.
