Pakistan has appointed its inaugural ambassador to Armenia after formalizing diplomatic relations in 2025. Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan officially presented his credentials to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan during a ceremony at the presidential palace in Yerevan.
Ambassador Khan holds a concurrent position as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and serves as the non-resident ambassador to Armenia. This diplomatic milestone follows the signing of a joint communique between Pakistan and Armenia in August of the previous year, which marked the formal establishment of bilateral relations.
In a significant development, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the signing of the Joint Communiqué on August 31 last year. He and Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan reaffirmed their dedication to the principles of the UN Charter and agreed to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors, including the economy, education, culture, and tourism.
During the credential presentation, President Khachaturyan congratulated Ambassador Khan on his appointment and expressed his support for initiatives aimed at deepening Armenia-Pakistan relations and expanding collaboration in areas of shared interest. Ambassador Khan reciprocated by conveying greetings from President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with Armenia.
The discussions highlighted substantial opportunities for growth in bilateral trade and investment, educational exchanges, cultural interaction, and people-to-people connectivity, alongside other facets of economic partnership.
Earlier engagements included Ambassador Khan’s meeting with Armenia’s Foreign Minister, who extended congratulations and wished him success in his diplomatic role. They reviewed the bilateral agenda, explored ways to broaden cooperation, and exchanged perspectives on regional and international affairs.
Ambassador Khan also met with Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mnatsakan Safaryan, presenting a copy of his Letters of Credence. The deputy minister acknowledged the establishment of diplomatic ties as a significant policy decision by both nations’ leadership and discussed prospects for enhancing collaboration in both bilateral and multilateral contexts.
Overall, Ambassador Khan’s visit to Yerevan reaffirmed the mutual commitment of Pakistan and Armenia to advance their bilateral relationship and identified new opportunities for cooperation across a wide spectrum of mutually beneficial areas.
