Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow on Monday over the death of Group Captain Asim Tariq, praising the officer for sacrificing his life while defending a woman’s safety and dignity. He described the act as an extraordinary demonstration of bravery, courage, and dedication to duty.
The prime minister emphasized that the nation will forever honor the sacrifices of such courageous individuals. He extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the fallen officer, affirming that the entire country stands united with them in their grief.
In a significant development, PM Shehbaz directed the relevant authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. He stressed the importance of ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and punished in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari also conveyed his condolences over the tragic loss of Group Captain Tariq. He highlighted that giving one’s life to protect a woman exemplifies the highest form of national service and valor. The president prayed for strength and patience for the bereaved family during this difficult time.
Notably, President Zardari expressed concern over the occurrence of such a violent crime on one of Islamabad’s main roads. He called for urgent and effective measures to enhance public safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Earlier on Sunday, police arrested the suspect accused of fatally shooting the Pakistan Air Force officer who intervened to stop an alleged abduction attempt in the capital. The suspect was apprehended from the Soan Zone area following an intensive manhunt.
police, Group Captain Tariq was driving along Ninth Avenue when he noticed a motorcyclist grabbing a woman’s hand. He stopped his vehicle and confronted the suspect, allowing the woman to escape to safety across the road.
A confrontation ensued, during which the suspect reportedly opened fire on the officer. Group Captain Tariq sustained critical injuries and later succumbed, while the attacker initially fled the scene.
During the investigation, the woman informed police that the suspect was her colleague. She explained that he had offered to give her a ride to work but diverted the route and attempted to take her to a different location against her will. Realizing the danger, she managed to disembark before the confrontation occurred.
Following the incident, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi requested a detailed report from the Islamabad Inspector General of Police. He directed authorities to ensure the swift arrest of the suspect and to bring all responsible parties to justice.
Group Captain Asim Tariq is survived by his widow, a daughter, and a son.
