ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday called for the urgent development of a comprehensive national agricultural policy alongside the establishment of a new apex body aimed at accelerating innovation and growth within the farming sector.

During a review meeting focused on restructuring the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the Prime Minister emphasized that the agriculture sector is pivotal for steering the country towards sustainable economic progress.

In a significant development, the proposed apex forum will convene monthly to oversee the effective implementation of Pakistan’s Agriculture Innovation and Growth Plan, ensuring coordinated efforts across the sector.

Sharif also instructed relevant authorities to initiate a nationwide awareness campaign promoting the “Zarkhez-e” agricultural loan program, designed to enhance farmers’ access to affordable credit facilities.

He further urged the transformation of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) into a world-class center for agricultural research and development.

Highlighting key strategies, the Prime Minister stated that increasing per-acre yields would be achieved through improved seed quality, adoption of modern agricultural technologies, and ensuring timely and adequate supply of water and fertilizers. He also stressed the importance of value addition, enhanced warehousing, and modern storage solutions for agricultural commodities.

Officials briefed the Prime Minister on ongoing initiatives, including the National Agricultural Research Centre’s (NARC) pilot production of multi-grain flour and the development of an artificial intelligence-based mobile application to assist farmers in managing pests and crop diseases more effectively.

Additionally, the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited will allocate dedicated funds to facilitate easier loan access for farmers, further supporting the sector’s growth.

Recent policy advancements include the approval of the National Seed Policy and the National Agriculture Biotechnology Policy. Consultations are also underway for the National Olive Value Chain Policy, a national wheat policy, and various livestock development initiatives.

The meeting was attended by key cabinet members such as Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, along with senior officials, underscoring the government’s commitment to revitalizing the agriculture sector.
