Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared on Monday that Pakistan will host the historic signing ceremony of the US-Iran peace agreement in Geneva on June 19. He described the deal as a monumental achievement for global peace, representing the triumph of dialogue over the devastation of war.

Addressing the National Assembly shortly after the announcement of the agreement by the prime minister and US President Donald Trump, he highlighted that the world had witnessed a significant victory for peace, with the flames of conflict beginning to subside. He called this a historic moment destined to be recorded in golden letters by historians.

Although still a framework, the agreement marks the most significant breakthrough in resolving the conflict that has resulted in thousands of deaths and disrupted energy markets since joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran began in February. The prime minister described the moment as a divine blessing following three months and sixteen days of intense challenges, stating that after a dark night of war, the sun of peace has finally risen.

He informed the assembly that the deal entails an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, between Iran and the United States. The agreement is not merely bilateral but symbolizes a victory for peace, dialogue, and diplomacy over the destruction of war.

PM Shehbaz emphasized the honor bestowed upon Pakistan by this development, something nations have sought for centuries. He extended congratulations to the Pakistani people and the global community, acknowledging the Speaker of the National Assembly and all members of the House. He also expressed gratitude to his party leadership, especially Nawaz Sharif, whose guidance he continues to rely upon.

Further, he congratulated President Asif Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and leaders of all political parties for their support. He praised US President Trump, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and all members of the negotiating teams for their wisdom, prudence, and patience throughout the difficult peace process.

In a significant development, the prime minister paid tribute to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for his crucial cooperation during the delicate and challenging negotiations. He also acknowledged the visionary leadership and full cooperation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

PM Shehbaz expressed deep appreciation for Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling him a great friend of Pakistan who made commendable contributions to advancing the peace talks while maintaining close consultation with Pakistan.

The prime minister’s remarks would have been incomplete without recognizing Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. He highlighted Munir’s tireless dedication, working day and night to extinguish the flames of war and establish peace. The prime minister witnessed firsthand the multiple stages and setbacks during the negotiations when the deal seemed on the verge of collapse, yet Munir’s unwavering courage helped secure the ceasefire.

PM Shehbaz underscored that without sincerity, steadfastness, and wisdom, the dream of global peace might have shattered, potentially resulting in even greater destruction. He paid tribute to Munir’s extraordinary role and extended collective gratitude from the nation.

The prime minister also congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for his relentless efforts in guiding the peace process to success. He welcomed the presence of the Iranian ambassador in the House and commended Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for his responsible engagement with the Iranian side. Additionally, he praised Pakistani officers across the foreign ministry and other institutions involved in the process.

PM Shehbaz noted that the destructive impact of the war had shaken the world and the global economy, with Pakistan’s economy under severe strain, which continues to this day. He lauded the patience of the Pakistani people and their support for the government, emphasizing that timely decisions helped shield the nation from the worst effects of inflation.

He saluted federal and provincial leadership and the Pakistani nation, affirming that the benefits of global economic stability resulting from the peace agreement would be passed on to all citizens.
