Balochistan Extends School Closures Until March 31, 2026 Amid Ongoing Challenges

The Government of Balochistan has officially extended the closure of all public and private educational institutions across the province until March 31, 2026. This decision comes as authorities continue to assess the prevailing conditions in the region, which have necessitated prolonged suspension of regular academic activities. The School Education Department issued a formal notification outlining the extension, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety and stability during this period.

Despite the extended shutdown, certain essential educational functions will proceed uninterrupted. These include ongoing school enrollment drives, the digital census of schools aimed at updating institutional data, and any scheduled examinations. Officials have stressed that these activities are crucial for maintaining the educational infrastructure and ensuring that students remain connected to the academic system, even as physical classes remain suspended.

Shahid Rind, spokesperson for the Balochistan Chief Minister, highlighted that the extension aligns with broader national-level precautionary measures. He noted that the provincial government is vigilantly monitoring the evolving situation and will make further decisions based on developments on the ground. Rind also appealed to parents and guardians to actively engage their children in learning activities during this extended break, underscoring the importance of keeping students intellectually stimulated despite the absence of formal schooling.

It is important to recall that the initial closure was announced until March 23, shortly after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, reflecting the government’s cautious approach in response to regional challenges. The extension now pushes the timeline further, signaling ongoing concerns that have yet to be fully resolved. Meanwhile, the provincial administration remains committed to resuming academic sessions as soon as conditions permit, ensuring that students do not face prolonged educational disruption.

In a related development, the Balochistan Cabinet convened under the leadership of Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti to approve a comprehensive austerity package. This initiative aims to curb government expenditures and conserve fuel resources amid mounting economic pressures both globally and regionally. Key components of the austerity measures include voluntary salary reductions by provincial ministers, advisers, and parliamentary secretaries, who will forgo two months’ pay. Additionally, members of the provincial assembly will accept a 25 percent voluntary cut in their salaries.

Further financial contributions will come from senior government officers, specifically those in Grade 20 and above earning more than Rs 300,000 monthly, who will donate the equivalent of two days’ salary. Notably, employees working in the health and education sectors have been exempted from these deductions, recognizing the critical nature of their roles during challenging times. This austerity package reflects the provincial government’s resolve to manage resources prudently while navigating economic uncertainties.
