Vinicius Shines as Real Madrid Edge Atletico; Barca Narrowly Defeat Rayo Vallecano

In a gripping Madrid derby on Sunday, Real Madrid emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over their city rivals Atletico Madrid, thanks to a spectacular double from Vinicius Junior. This important triumph allowed Los Blancos to maintain a close chase on La Liga leaders Barcelona, who had earlier secured a narrow 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano. The victory at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu ensured that the gap between the reigning champions and their closest challengers remained at four points, intensifying the battle for the top spot in Spain’s premier football division.

The match itself was a rollercoaster of emotions. Atletico took an early lead through Ademola Lookman’s first-half strike, giving Diego Simeone’s side hope of a positive result. However, Real Madrid responded swiftly after the break, with Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde both finding the back of the net to turn the game in favor of the hosts. Atletico refused to back down, with Nahuel Molina unleashing a stunning long-range effort to level the score. Yet, Vinicius once again proved decisive, scoring the winning goal that sealed the three points for Madrid. Despite Valverde’s late red card for a foul on Alex Baena, Real Madrid held firm to claim a hard-fought derby victory.

This match marked a significant milestone for Alvaro Arbeloa, who managed his first derby against Atletico since taking charge of Real Madrid in January. Reflecting on the team’s performance, Arbeloa praised his squad’s resilience and mental toughness, especially after being reduced to ten men. “We showed mental toughness and strength worthy of this club’s badge,” Arbeloa said, expressing pride in the team’s ability to endure pressure and secure a crucial win. The victory capped off a remarkable week for Real Madrid, who had recently eliminated Manchester City from the Champions League round of 16, signaling a strong run of form under their new coach.

Vinicius Junior’s contribution was particularly noteworthy, as his brace brought his tally to 10 goals in his last 11 appearances across all competitions. Speaking after the match, the Brazilian winger highlighted his continuous improvement and dedication throughout the season. “I’m very happy because I’ve worked all season for games like this,” Vinicius remarked. “When this moment of the season arrives, I don’t know why, I always improve.” Arbeloa has been a vocal supporter of Vinicius since assuming his role, helping the forward regain confidence and form after a challenging period under former coach Xabi Alonso. “Another great game from Vinicius, another demonstration of bravery and character,” Arbeloa commented. “A great goal to give us victory in a tricky moment, I’m so lucky to have him, for his commitment and his talent.”

The match also saw the return of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe from injuries, with both players coming on as substitutes. Bellingham made his first appearance since early February following a hamstring injury, while Mbappe returned after recovering from a knee sprain. Despite their presence, Real Madrid had to focus on defending after Valverde’s dismissal, which the team contested as harsh but ultimately accepted. It is worth noting that Baena, the player fouled by Valverde, had previously accused the midfielder of violent conduct during a match in 2023 when Baena was with Villarreal.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid remain just one point behind third-placed Villarreal, who secured a win against Real Sociedad on Friday. This keeps the competition for European qualification spots intense as the season progresses.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Barcelona managed to scrape a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou. Defender Ronald Araujo scored the decisive goal with a header from a corner in the 24th minute, providing crucial points ahead of the international break. However, the match was far from straightforward for the Catalan giants. Rayo’s goalkeeper Joan Garcia delivered an outstanding performance, making several key saves that kept his team in contention throughout the game. Recently called up to the Spanish national team for the first time, Garcia’s efforts were instrumental in preventing Rayo from conceding more goals, even as Barcelona dominated possession in the second half.

Raphinha, Barcelona’s winger, had multiple chances but failed to convert, adding to the tension. Araujo, who had taken a mental health break late last year and had limited appearances since, showed his value by scoring a vital goal. He had also come on as a substitute during Barcelona’s impressive 7-2 Champions League victory over Newcastle earlier in the week. “I feel very good, physically well, it’s important that I can help the team,” Araujo said, reflecting on his return to form. On the defensive end, Garcia continued to frustrate Rayo’s attempts, denying shots from Alvaro Garcia and Unai Lopez, while Rayo’s Pacha Espino missed a significant opportunity to equalize by shooting over the bar after breaking through Barcelona’s high defensive line.

In other La Liga action, Alaves staged a remarkable comeback from three goals down to defeat Celta Vigo 4-3, moving up to 16th place in the standings. Athletic Bilbao also secured a 2-1 victory over fifth-placed Real Betis, keeping their hopes alive for European competition next season. These results add further excitement to the league as teams battle for survival and continental qualification spots.
