Pakistan Adjusts Passport Office Hours to Support National Fuel Conservation Drive

The government of Pakistan has introduced a significant change to the operational hours of passport offices nationwide as part of its ongoing efforts to conserve fuel and implement austerity measures. This adjustment, announced by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, reflects a strategic move to optimize resource usage across federal departments.

Under the newly issued guidelines, passport offices will now function only four days a week, specifically from Monday through Thursday. This means that all passport service centers will remain closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The decision marks a departure from the previous six-day or extended working schedules that many offices followed, aiming to reduce the overall energy consumption and commuting requirements of both staff and citizens.

Officials involved in the policy formulation explained that this change aligns with the government’s broader agenda to lower fuel consumption and decrease operational costs within public sector institutions. By compressing the workweek, authorities anticipate a notable reduction in daily travel for employees and visitors, which in turn is expected to contribute to a decline in fuel usage and electricity demand at government facilities.

The revised timetable has received formal approval from the Director General of the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports after careful consideration of various energy-saving strategies. This move is part of a larger national campaign to promote sustainability and responsible consumption of limited energy resources, especially in light of ongoing challenges related to fuel supply and economic pressures.

It is important to note, however, that certain regional passport offices which currently offer round-the-clock services will continue their operations without any interruption. These centers are critical for handling urgent and emergency passport requests, ensuring that citizens requiring immediate assistance will not face delays due to the new schedule. Additionally, Swift Service Centres, known for their expedited processing, will maintain their existing shift patterns to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery.

Authorities have emphasized that the primary goal behind adjusting the passport office hours is to strike a balance between maintaining efficient public service and advancing the government’s energy conservation objectives. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed about the updated working days and plan their visits accordingly to avoid inconvenience. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable governance while continuing to provide essential services to the public.
