The Federal Bureau of Investigation has initiated a terrorism investigation following a tragic shooting incident at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The attack resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to two U.S. Army personnel. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the development on Thursday, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the bureau’s commitment to uncovering the full circumstances behind the shooting.

The gunman responsible for the attack was swiftly neutralized shortly after opening fire inside a classroom located within the university’s College of Business. Remarkably, a group of students courageously intervened, managing to subdue the assailant before law enforcement arrived. This quick action likely prevented further casualties and highlighted the bravery of those present during the chaotic event.

FBI Director Patel also noted that the bureau’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is actively engaged in the investigation, working closely alongside local authorities. They are providing all necessary resources and support to ensure a thorough and coordinated response. This collaboration underscores the gravity with which federal and local agencies are treating the incident, reflecting concerns over potential motives linked to terrorism.

Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as Mohamed Jalloh. Old Dominion University’s Chief of Police, Garrett Shelton, two victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where one succumbed to injuries. A third individual, also believed to be a victim, received medical treatment at a separate hospital facility. All three individuals involved were affiliated with the university, either as students or staff members. Shelton refrained from releasing the name of the deceased until the family had been properly notified, respecting privacy and protocol.

In response to the incident, the university promptly issued a statement on its website assuring the public that the immediate threat had been neutralized. However, officials urged people to avoid the area as emergency responders continued their work on the scene. As a precaution, all classes and campus operations were suspended for the remainder of the day to allow for investigation and to support the university community during this difficult time.

The shooting reportedly began just before 10:49 a.m., disrupting the normally bustling academic environment of the College of Business. Founded in 1930, Old Dominion University serves a student body of approximately 24,000, making it one of the larger institutions in the region. The incident has sent shockwaves through the campus and the wider Norfolk community.

Expressions of sympathy and support quickly emerged from various quarters. U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll expressed his deep sorrow over the shooting and the injuries sustained by the two Army personnel involved. Meanwhile, University President Brian Hemphill addressed the campus community, acknowledging the profound tragedy and extending gratitude to law enforcement and emergency teams for their rapid and effective response.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger also weighed in, sharing that she had been in contact with university officials and was coordinating state resources to assist in managing the aftermath of the shooting. Her statement on social media reflected the state’s commitment to supporting Old Dominion University and ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and staff during this challenging period.
