UN Reports Over 3 Million Internally Displaced in Iran Amid Middle East Conflict

The United Nations refugee agency has revealed a staggering humanitarian crisis unfolding within Iran, where more than 3.2 million individuals have been displaced internally since the outbreak of the recent Middle East conflict. This alarming figure highlights the severe impact the ongoing war has had on civilian populations, forcing hundreds of thousands to abandon their homes in search of safety.

Ayaki Ito, who leads the UNHCR emergency support team and coordinates the refugee response for the Middle East region, provided insight into the scale of displacement. He noted that preliminary assessments estimate between 600,000 and one million Iranian households are currently uprooted within the country. This translates to roughly 3.2 million people who have been compelled to leave their residences temporarily due to the intensifying hostilities.

These displacements are primarily driven by the conflict that erupted following the initial wave of attacks launched by the United States and Israel on February 28. Since then, Iran has retaliated by targeting multiple locations across the Gulf, escalating tensions and violence. As a result, many civilians have been forced to flee from major urban centers such as Tehran, seeking refuge in northern regions and rural areas where the threat of conflict is perceived to be lower.

In addition to Iranian nationals, refugee families residing in Iran—most of whom are Afghan—have also been severely affected by the deteriorating security situation. These communities are particularly vulnerable due to their already fragile living conditions and limited access to social support systems. The displacement has compounded their hardships, with many families struggling to access essential services amid the chaos.

The UNHCR has emphasized the urgent need to protect these civilians caught in the crossfire. As population movements increase, the agency is actively collaborating with Iranian authorities and local partners to assess evolving needs and enhance preparedness for further displacement. Efforts are underway to adapt humanitarian responses to the growing crisis, ensuring that aid reaches those most affected.

Ayaki Ito underscored the critical importance of maintaining humanitarian corridors and keeping borders open for those seeking safety, in accordance with international laws and obligations. The situation remains fluid and precarious, with the potential for displacement numbers to rise as the conflict continues unabated. The international community faces mounting pressure to address the escalating humanitarian challenges within Iran and the broader region.
