Punjab Government Extends Section 144 Restrictions for Another Week Amid Security Concerns

The Punjab government has announced an extension of Section 144 across the entire province for an additional seven days, reinforcing restrictions on public assemblies. This decision, formalized through an official notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, prohibits all forms of public gatherings, rallies, and demonstrations without prior approval. The move comes amid heightened concerns over security and the potential for unrest.

The notification highlights that the extension of these restrictions is primarily driven by credible intelligence reports pointing to possible terrorism threats targeting sensitive gatherings. Authorities fear that such events could be exploited by hostile elements to disrupt peace and stability in the region. Consequently, the government has adopted these precautionary measures to safeguard public safety and prevent any untoward incidents.

Under the extended orders, any assembly of people in public spaces without obtaining prior permission from relevant authorities will be strictly prohibited. Additionally, the display or carrying of weapons in public has been completely banned throughout Punjab, aiming to reduce the risk of violent confrontations or attacks. However, law enforcement personnel engaged in official duties will be exempt from this prohibition, allowing them to maintain order effectively.

It is important to note that certain exceptions have been carved out from the restrictions. Events such as wedding ceremonies, funeral processions, and court-related proceedings will continue to be allowed, recognizing their social and legal significance. Meanwhile, district administrations and police departments have been instructed to enforce these measures rigorously, ensuring compliance at all levels to uphold public order.

The continuation of Section 144 reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to maintaining peace and security in Punjab during a period of increased vigilance. Authorities remain alert to evolving threats and are prepared to take further action if necessary to protect citizens and prevent any disruption to daily life. The restrictions will remain in place for the next seven days, with officials closely monitoring the situation to determine future steps.
