Maryam Nawaz Orders Heightened Security Measures and Surveillance Across Punjab Amid Rising Threats

Punjab has been placed on heightened security alert following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to strengthen surveillance and law enforcement efforts throughout the province. This decision comes amid growing concerns over potential security threats, prompting a comprehensive review and reinforcement of existing measures to safeguard public safety. The Chief Minister convened a crucial high-level meeting focused on the current law and order situation, where senior officials provided detailed updates on the security landscape.

During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the need for rigorous monitoring of individuals listed under the Fourth Schedule, as well as other persons of interest who may pose a risk to public order. The Chief Minister underscored the importance of maintaining vigilance in light of escalating regional tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, which has raised concerns about possible spillover effects within Punjab. She instructed authorities to boost security protocols, especially in crowded public spaces such as shopping malls, major marketplaces, and other high-traffic areas.

In addition to intensifying surveillance, the provincial government has ordered the continuation and expansion of combing operations aimed at rooting out any suspicious elements in sensitive zones. Police forces and district administrations across all districts have been directed to remain alert and conduct thorough checks on individuals exhibiting unusual behavior. Enhanced security measures at entry and exit points of the province have also been mandated to prevent unauthorized movement and ensure tighter control over border areas.

Maryam Nawaz further called for the deployment of additional law enforcement personnel at key commercial centers to deter any potential threats and ensure rapid response capabilities in case of emergencies. She made it clear that the government would not tolerate any attempts to undermine law and order or take justice into private hands. The Chief Minister’s firm stance reflects the administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability amid a challenging security environment.

Officials at the meeting highlighted that the security situation remains volatile, necessitating the continuation of Section 144 across Punjab until March 7. This legal provision prohibits public gatherings of four or more people and bans the display of weapons, measures aimed at preventing acts of terrorism and preserving public order. The Home Secretary also briefed attendees on ongoing efforts to repatriate illegal foreign nationals residing in the province, a key component of the broader security strategy.

To date, authorities have deported a total of 32,729 undocumented foreign residents, including a significant number of Afghan nationals. Among those repatriated are 12,356 men, 6,673 women, and 13,700 children, while 346 individuals remain at holding centers pending further processing. These efforts are part of a sustained crackdown on illegal immigration and related security risks.

The meeting concluded with a review of additional security protocols, including the monitoring of sensitive installations and red zones, as well as the enforcement of legal actions against those spreading content deemed harmful to national security on social media platforms. Key officials present included Chief Secretary Zahid Zaman, Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi, Additional Inspector General of the Special Branch, Counter Terrorism Department representatives, and other relevant authorities, all working in coordination to implement the Chief Minister’s directives effectively.

Overall, the Punjab government’s proactive approach aims to fortify the province’s defenses against emerging threats, ensuring that residents can continue their daily lives without fear. The heightened alert status and comprehensive security measures reflect a clear message that maintaining peace and stability remains a top priority for the provincial leadership during these uncertain times.
