Israel Expands Military Strikes to Lebanon Amid Rising Iran Conflict Tensions

On Monday, Israel significantly escalated its military operations by launching fresh air strikes not only against Iranian targets but also extending its offensive to Hezbollah-controlled areas in Lebanon. This development marks a notable widening of the conflict that has been intensifying since the recent US-Israeli attacks on Iran. The expansion of hostilities comes as US President Donald Trump indicated that the joint military campaign targeting Iranian assets could persist for several more weeks, signaling a prolonged period of regional instability.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that their recent strikes focused on locations linked to Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group allied with Iran. This action followed Hezbollah’s admission that it had fired missiles and deployed drones toward Israeli territory in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The Israeli military also reported intercepting a projectile launched from Lebanese soil, while other missiles landed in unpopulated areas, minimizing casualties but heightening tensions along the border.

In the early hours of Monday, the skies above Beirut were rocked by more than a dozen explosions as Israeli air raids targeted the southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold. The strikes reportedly included attacks on senior Hezbollah commanders near the Lebanese capital. The sudden bombardment forced many residents to flee their homes, clogging the city’s roads as people sought safety by foot and car. The attacks began around 2:40 a.m. local time (0040 GMT), shattering a fragile calm that had persisted since a US-mediated ceasefire was agreed upon in 2024 after over a year of intense fighting that had significantly weakened Hezbollah’s capabilities.

This recent exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel has further broadened the scope of the conflict, which has rapidly spread across the Middle East following the US and Israeli strikes on Iran last Saturday. The escalation has already impacted global markets, causing oil prices to surge and disrupting international air travel routes. Despite previous assurances from Lebanon’s presidency, which stated that Israel would refrain from escalating hostilities against Lebanon provided no aggressive acts originated from Lebanese territory, the situation has deteriorated sharply. The US ambassador had conveyed this message to Lebanese officials just days before the renewed violence.

The Israeli military has placed full responsibility for the escalation on Hezbollah, issuing stern warnings to residents of numerous villages in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate immediately in anticipation of further strikes. Meanwhile, the IDF announced on Sunday night that its air force had achieved aerial dominance over Tehran. The wave of attacks in Iran’s capital targeted critical intelligence, security, and military command centers, aiming to cripple the country’s operational capabilities.

Within Iran, a significant political development unfolded as President Masoud Pezeshkian revealed that a leadership council, consisting of himself, the judiciary chief, and a member of the influential Guardian Council, had temporarily taken over the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader. This announcement came amid the ongoing crisis and heightened military pressure. Concurrently, air raid sirens blared across Israel late Sunday, including in the major city of Tel Aviv, where residents witnessed projectiles streaking across the night sky as Iran launched fresh missile barrages, intensifying the cycle of retaliatory attacks.

As the conflict continues to escalate, the region faces an uncertain and volatile future, with diplomatic efforts struggling to contain the widening confrontation. The involvement of multiple state and non-state actors has complicated the situation, raising concerns about a broader regional war that could have far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate combat zones.
