Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Urges Respectful Police Conduct Amid Khamenei Mourning Protests

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has issued clear directives to the police and district administration in Lahore to approach the ongoing protests with sensitivity and respect. This comes in the wake of widespread demonstrations triggered by the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Recognizing the deep emotions involved, Maryam Nawaz stressed the importance of understanding the sentiments of the protesters and ensuring that law enforcement personnel engage with them in a humane and dignified manner.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister highlighted that authorities have been instructed to handle the situation with empathy, avoiding any harsh measures that could escalate tensions. She also revealed that arrangements are underway to provide Iftar meals to the demonstrators, reflecting a compassionate approach during the holy month of Ramadan. This gesture aims to support the protesters while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the city.

Maryam Nawaz further acknowledged the collective grief felt by Muslims across the country, emphasizing that while sorrow unites them, preserving law and order remains a paramount responsibility for all citizens. She called on the public to remain calm and uphold peace, reminding everyone that maintaining security in their cities and neighborhoods is a shared duty, especially during such emotionally charged times.

Meanwhile, the situation in Karachi has taken a more volatile turn. Earlier today, clashes between protesters and law enforcement near the US Consulate resulted in tragic casualties, with nine people losing their lives and eighteen others sustaining injuries, as confirmed by hospital officials. Eyewitness accounts and statements from the Edhi Foundation indicate that police resorted to teargas and baton charges in an attempt to control the unrest, which has further inflamed tensions in the area.

In response to the disturbances, authorities have temporarily shut down key roads connecting Sultanabad to Mai Kolachi to prevent further escalation and to facilitate the movement of emergency services. Traffic from Jinnah Bridge has been rerouted through I.I. Chundrigar Road to ease congestion and maintain order. Security officials have urged residents and commuters to avoid these areas until the situation stabilizes, as law enforcement continues efforts to restore calm and protect public safety.

These developments underscore the delicate balance that provincial and city administrations must maintain during periods of political and religious unrest. The Punjab Chief Minister’s call for respectful treatment of protesters reflects a broader commitment to managing dissent with care, while the events in Karachi highlight the challenges faced by authorities in containing violence and safeguarding civilians. As the nation mourns and expresses solidarity, the emphasis remains on peaceful demonstration and the preservation of public order.
