Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Urges Police to Respect Protesters Amid Khamenei’s Martyrdom

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has issued clear directives to law enforcement agencies in Lahore to approach the ongoing protests with sensitivity and respect following the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Emphasizing the importance of empathy, she urged police and district officials to recognize the emotional state of demonstrators and ensure their treatment upholds human dignity during these difficult times.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Maryam Nawaz highlighted that authorities have been instructed to carefully consider the sentiments of those protesting, assuring that no harsh measures should be taken against them. She also revealed that arrangements are underway to provide Iftar meals to the protesters, reflecting a gesture of goodwill and solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan. This move aims to ease tensions and foster a peaceful environment despite the charged atmosphere.

Further elaborating on the situation, the Punjab chief minister acknowledged the collective grief felt by Muslims nationwide in response to the loss of a revered religious figure. She stressed that while sorrow unites the community, it is equally vital to maintain law and order across cities and towns. Maryam Nawaz called on all citizens to contribute to preserving peace, stating that ensuring public safety remains a shared responsibility, especially during moments of mourning and unrest.

The backdrop to these developments includes a violent incident earlier in the day near Karachi’s US Consulate, where clashes between protesters and law enforcement resulted in nine fatalities and left 18 individuals injured. Medical officials confirmed the casualties, underscoring the severity of the confrontation. Eyewitness accounts and statements from the Edhi Foundation indicated that police resorted to tear gas and baton charges in an attempt to disperse the crowd and regain control of the area.

In response to the unrest, authorities temporarily shut down roads connecting Sultanabad to Mai Kolachi to prevent further escalation and manage traffic flow. Additionally, vehicles traveling from Jinnah Bridge were rerouted through I.I. Chundrigar Road to alleviate congestion and facilitate the movement of emergency services. Security officials have urged the public to avoid the affected zones as they continue efforts to stabilize the situation and uphold public order.

These events highlight the delicate balance between respecting citizens’ rights to express their grief and ensuring the safety of all residents. The government’s approach, as articulated by Maryam Nawaz, reflects a commitment to handling protests with compassion while simultaneously safeguarding peace and security in the country’s urban centers.
