Violent Protests Erupt at US Consulate Karachi After Reports of Khamenei Assassination

In a dramatic and unsettling development, violent protests broke out outside the United States Consulate in Karachi shortly after reports emerged of the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israel strike on Iran. The news triggered an immediate and intense reaction from demonstrators, who gathered in large numbers near the consulate, expressing their outrage through chants and attempts to breach the diplomatic compound.

The protest quickly escalated as the crowd grew restless and aggressive. Eyewitnesses described how some protesters managed to forcefully break through the main gate, gaining access to the outer premises of the consulate. This breach prompted a swift response from law enforcement officials, who deployed tear gas and resorted to baton charges in an effort to regain control and disperse the agitated crowd. Despite these measures, the situation remained volatile, with at least five individuals reported injured during the clashes.

Authorities responded by reinforcing the security presence around the consulate, bringing in additional police personnel to restore order and prevent further escalation. All roads leading to the consulate were promptly sealed off to contain the unrest and protect the diplomatic mission. The protest not only posed a security challenge but also severely disrupted daily life in one of Karachi’s most important commercial and diplomatic districts.

Traffic authorities confirmed that the main thoroughfare from Sultanabad to Mai Kolachi was completely closed in both directions, causing significant congestion and inconvenience for commuters. To mitigate the impact, officials implemented a series of alternative routes: vehicles traveling from Jinnah Bridge were redirected towards I.I. Chundrigar Road, while traffic originating from Boat Basin was turned back at Mai Kolachi junction. Similarly, vehicles coming from PIDC were rerouted at Park Cut. These measures aimed to ease the gridlock and maintain some flow of traffic despite the ongoing unrest.

The protests reflect the heightened regional tensions following the reported assassination of a key figure in Iranian politics. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and unrest in various parts of the world, with Karachi witnessing one of the most intense reactions. Security agencies remain on high alert as they continue efforts to manage the situation and prevent further violence. Citizens have been urged to avoid the affected areas and follow official guidance to minimize disruption.
