Iran Suffers Heavy Losses as US-Israel Airstrikes Kill Top Revolutionary Guard Leaders

Tehran has been rocked by a series of devastating airstrikes launched jointly by the United States and Israel, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials. Among the casualties is Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a prominent figure within Iran’s political and military establishment. The coordinated attacks also claimed the life of Mohammad Pakpour, a key commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), marking a significant blow to Iran’s military leadership.

The strikes targeted multiple strategic locations across the Iranian capital, Tehran, in what Israeli officials have described as their most extensive aerial operation against Iran to date. These precision attacks aimed to dismantle Iran’s missile infrastructure and command centers, severely disrupting the country’s defense capabilities. The destruction of Khamenei’s compound was also confirmed, signaling a direct assault on the core of Iran’s leadership.

In the immediate aftermath, Iran announced the formation of a temporary governing council to manage the crisis. This body includes President Ebrahim Raisi, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council, tasked with overseeing key state functions during this turbulent period. The announcement followed confirmation from Iranian media of the death of Supreme Leader Khamenei himself, who had been the country’s supreme authority since 1989. Khamenei, aged 86, wielded unparalleled influence over Iran’s military and political spheres, making his reported demise a historic turning point.

To honor Khamenei’s legacy, Iran has declared a 40-day mourning period along with seven public holidays, underscoring the gravity of the loss felt across the nation. The government has condemned the strikes as illegal acts of aggression, vowing to retaliate with missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territory and Gulf countries hosting American military bases. Reports have emerged of missile launches over Tel Aviv, while nations such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain have activated their air defense systems in response to the heightened threat.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation as tensions escalate sharply in the region. US President Donald Trump emphasized the close coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv in executing the operation, which involved nearly 200 fighter jets striking hundreds of targets. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted the scale and precision of the campaign, framing it as a decisive blow against Iran’s military infrastructure.

Meanwhile, global oil markets have reacted nervously to the unfolding crisis, particularly amid warnings from Tehran about a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies. With nuclear negotiations between Iran and world powers already stalled, the ongoing missile exchanges and military confrontations raise fears of a wider regional conflict that could destabilize the Middle East for years to come.
