US Naval Deployment Heightens Military Tensions in Eastern Mediterranean Amid Iran Strikes

Security measures at Greece’s strategic Souda naval base on the island of Crete have been significantly intensified following recent coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel targeting Iran. This naval facility, which serves as a critical operational hub for Greece, the US, and NATO forces in the eastern Mediterranean, has been placed on high alert to address the growing regional tensions. Access to the base is now strictly limited to authorized security personnel and essential staff, while advanced air defense systems have been activated to safeguard against potential threats.

Last week, the US Navy’s aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford made a scheduled stop at Souda for resupply and refueling before proceeding with its deployment in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The presence of such a formidable naval asset underscores the strategic importance of the region amid escalating military activities. The deployment comes at a time when the US administration has launched a significant military campaign against Iran, marking one of the most consequential foreign policy moves of President Donald Trump’s tenure.

On Saturday, the United States, in coordination with Israeli forces, executed a series of strikes aimed at crippling Iran’s top military and political infrastructure, including its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. These operations have been described by President Trump as “major combat operations,” reflecting the scale and intensity of the offensive. The strikes have triggered immediate retaliatory missile attacks from Tehran targeting Israeli territories and US military installations in the Gulf region, raising alarms about the potential for a broader and more dangerous regional conflict.

The international community has responded with a mix of concern and calls for de-escalation. China and Russia, two key global powers with vested interests in Middle Eastern stability, have urged all parties to exercise restraint. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson voiced deep apprehension over the unfolding situation, emphasizing the necessity to respect Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The spokesperson called for an immediate halt to hostilities and encouraged renewed dialogue and negotiations to restore peace and stability in the volatile region.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev criticized the United States for allegedly using ongoing nuclear negotiations as a pretext for military aggression. The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as reckless actions that threaten to further destabilize the Middle East, urging the international community to assess the situation objectively and work towards preventing further escalation.

From the Middle East, Iran vehemently condemned the attacks, labeling them a blatant violation of its sovereignty and a breach of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity of states. Tehran vowed a decisive and robust response to defend its homeland, underscoring that while it had initially sought diplomatic solutions to avoid conflict, the recent aggression has made military retaliation unavoidable.

The United Nations has also stepped into the fray, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities. He warned that the ongoing escalation poses grave risks to civilian populations and threatens the fragile stability of the entire region. In response, the UN Security Council scheduled an emergency session to address the crisis and explore pathways to de-escalate tensions.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed deep concern over the recent US and Israeli strikes, condemning them as violations of Iran’s sovereignty and detrimental to regional peace. Speaking from Istanbul, Erdogan also criticized Iran’s retaliatory missile attacks on Gulf countries, describing such actions as unacceptable and counterproductive. He cautioned that without urgent diplomatic intervention and mutual restraint, the Middle East risks descending into a dangerous spiral of escalating violence.

In light of these developments, Erdogan pledged that Turkey would intensify its diplomatic efforts to facilitate a ceasefire and promote renewed negotiations between the conflicting parties. His call for immediate measures to prevent further bloodshed highlights the growing urgency felt across the region to avoid a full-scale conflict that could have far-reaching consequences beyond the Middle East.
