Pakistan Reports Significant Taliban Casualties Amid Rising Border Tensions; Bannu on High Securi…

Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, provided a detailed update on the ongoing military campaign against Afghan Taliban militants, highlighting substantial losses inflicted on insurgent forces since the launch of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq. This offensive was initiated following a marked escalation in cross-border hostilities along the Durand Line, a region long fraught with security challenges.

In an early Saturday post on the social media platform X, Tarar revealed that Pakistani armed forces have successfully neutralized 331 Taliban fighters, while inflicting injuries on more than 500 others since the operation began. The offensive has not only targeted personnel but also militant infrastructure, with 104 Taliban posts reportedly destroyed and 22 captured. Additionally, the military disabled 163 tanks and other armored vehicles, significantly degrading the militants’ operational capabilities.

These results were achieved through a combination of ground assaults and precision airstrikes, with Pakistani forces conducting aerial attacks on 37 locations inside Afghanistan. These strikes focused on dismantling the Taliban’s logistical networks and command centers, thereby aiming to curb the flow of militants and weapons across the porous border. The operation underscores Islamabad’s commitment to countering militancy that emanates from Afghan territory, particularly from groups aligned with the Afghan Taliban regime.

The recent surge in military activity follows a series of what Pakistani officials describe as unprovoked attacks on their border positions. Islamabad has consistently emphasized that these operations are defensive in nature, aimed at safeguarding national security and preventing cross-border terrorism. The Durand Line, which serves as the de facto border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, has historically been a hotspot for militant infiltration and clashes, making the current escalation a continuation of long-standing tensions in the region.

Meanwhile, in response to the heightened threat environment, the district administration of Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has declared a state of emergency to protect civilians and maintain law and order. Authorities have imposed restrictions on the movement of certain vehicle categories within the city, urging residents to stay alert and adhere strictly to official instructions. This precautionary stance reflects growing concerns over potential terrorist activities targeting urban centers.

Local police acted swiftly on credible intelligence pointing to planned sabotage involving various vehicles, prompting the District Education Officer, Abdul Malik, to announce the closure of all government schools in Bannu for one day. This measure aims to safeguard students and staff from any possible threats. Additionally, the District Bar Association has called for a complete strike, with General Secretary Usman Sikandari expressing apprehension over the volatile security situation through an official notification.

Security forces in Bannu have been placed on high alert, with intensified patrols and reinforced checkpoints, particularly around sensitive military installations such as Bannu Cantonment and the Police Lines. Several roads near these strategic locations have been temporarily closed to prevent any untoward incidents. District Police Officer Yasir Afridi confirmed that at least six planned terrorist attacks were successfully foiled at multiple sites, including the Kashoo Bridge police check post, Kotka Muhammad Khan Domel, and Kinger check post. Fortunately, no significant injuries were reported during these thwarted attempts.

These developments highlight the ongoing challenges Pakistan faces in securing its western border and combating militant threats that have long plagued the region. The government’s proactive military operations, coupled with heightened local security measures, demonstrate a multi-pronged approach to maintaining stability and protecting citizens from the dangers posed by cross-border terrorism.
