Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices in Lahore have started to fall after fresh supplies reached the city. The price dropped by Rs 50 per kilogram following the arrival of new stocks, but the fuel is still being sold at inflated rates, currently Rs 550 per kg.

Local LPG dealers said a further significant drop in prices was expected today.

LPG still selling at nearly double the official rate

The government-fixed rate for LPG is Rs 279 per kg, a figure set by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) at Rs 279.34 per kilo. Earlier, the price had soared to Rs 550 per kg, almost double that official rate.

Citizens remain concerned that the fuel is still being sold at almost twice the official rate. Consumers in the city are still paying far above the price fixed for the fuel.

Distributors blame inflated rates on illegal profiteering

LPG Distributors Association Chairman Irfan Khokhar said companies charging inflated rates were behind the problem, adding that rising demand for the fuel was being used for illegal profiteering. He said there were countrywide reports of LPG selling for Rs 500 to 600 per kilogram.

Khokhar warned that prices could rise further if supply was disrupted. He questioned how the market could stabilise if government-set rates were not implemented, and demanded action against the alleged black-marketing of LPG and the people behind it.

The price surge follows gas loadshedding, which has added to the strain on consumers. Reports note that higher LPG prices have added to the burden on households, hitting low-income families hard amid rising living costs.
