A renewed surge in hostilities between the United States and Iran has escalated fears over civilian safety, as Iranian officials report fatalities from recent US airstrikes, including casualties at a wedding ceremony. The Iranian Health Minister confirmed that 18 individuals were killed and 108 injured during US attacks across the country on Tuesday night. Separately, the Iranian Red Crescent reported four deaths and 67 injuries at a wedding near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a significant development, Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones targeting what it described as US military installations in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Iraq. Kuwait’s military detected additional missile and drone attacks early Thursday, which were successfully intercepted by its air defense systems.
This escalation follows a period of relative calm since the last major exchange in July, during which diplomatic efforts to revive peace talks have stalled. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned of potential further military responses. The conflict has become politically sensitive in the US, facing domestic opposition and contributing to rising fuel prices.
Notably, senior advisers to President Trump are reportedly working to prevent the conflict from expanding ahead of the November midterm elections. Internal discussions suggest the White House may reconsider its military strategy after the November 3 vote.
Despite enduring significant military and economic setbacks, Iran remains defiant and refuses to yield to pressure. The ongoing clashes have heightened concerns among neighboring countries about the possibility of the conflict spreading beyond Iran and the US, putting civilians across the region at increased risk.
The renewed violence also threatens to derail diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the hostilities. The reported civilian casualties have intensified calls for a reduction in military actions. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm over the civilian deaths, including the strike on the wedding, urging an immediate halt to military operations. He condemned all attacks on civilians and reminded all parties to uphold international humanitarian law principles such as distinction, proportionality, and precaution.
The reported deaths add to the 3,636 fatalities documented in Iran as of April 7, including 1,701 civilians, the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), an independent Iranian rights organization. The US has reported 18 military personnel killed and over 750 wounded.
US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for Central Command, stated that the US military does not target civilians, contrasting its conduct with that of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The Iranian Red Crescent Society released footage showing debris near a building with a large hole in its roof, alongside images of people, some wearing Red Crescent vests, at the damaged site and a fallen utility tower nearby. Satellite imagery verified the location, confirming the tower was 136 meters from the damaged building.
The wedding incident evokes memories of a blast at a girls’ school in Minab that killed 160 people on the first day of the conflict. The Pentagon has yet to release an official report on the Minab strike, which could represent the largest civilian casualty event involving the US military in decades. Sources suggest the incident may have resulted from outdated targeting data. Democratic members of Congress have urged the administration to disclose the investigation’s findings, but the report has not been shared with lawmakers.
Supporters of the US campaign against Iran highlight civilian deaths caused by Iranian efforts to suppress street protests in December and January, prior to US and Israeli attacks on February 28. HRANA estimates that over 7,000 people died during those protests, with Iranian exile groups claiming even higher numbers.
President Trump has justified the conflict partly as an effort to encourage Iranians to overthrow their government, alongside aims to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions and end its backing of militant groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.
In response to US strikes, Iran has threatened to target any oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz without its authorization, severely restricting traffic through this critical waterway that previously handled 20% of the world’s oil supply.
