UNESCO Warns 2.4 Million Afghan Girls Barred from Education Amid Taliban Rule

UNESCO has highlighted a critical education crisis in Afghanistan, revealing that approximately 2.4 million girls are currently denied the opportunity to continue their schooling. This alarming figure stems from the Taliban’s restrictive policies implemented since their return to power in 2021, which have severely limited girls’ access to secondary and higher education. The international community has expressed growing concern over the long-term impact of these restrictions on Afghan society and development.

In a significant development, UNESCO warns that if the Taliban does not reverse its stance, the number of girls deprived of education could escalate to four million by 2030. Education is widely recognized as a fundamental driver of social and economic progress, and the exclusion of such a large segment of the population threatens to undermine Afghanistan’s future stability and growth. The situation also raises broader questions about human rights and gender equality under the current regime.

Meanwhile, global organizations and governments continue to advocate for the restoration of educational rights for Afghan girls, emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies for sustainable development. The denial of education not only affects individual lives but also hampers national recovery efforts after decades of conflict. The international community remains vigilant, urging the Taliban to reconsider its policies to prevent a lost generation of Afghan girls.
