Russian Court Labels LGBT Groups ‘Extremist’ Amid Crackdown

In a significant development, two prominent Russian LGBT organizations have been officially classified as “extremist” by separate courts, marking an escalation in the government’s crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community. The Moscow Community Center for LGBT+ Initiatives and ParniPlus, an organization focused on LGBT health and rights, announced their intention to continue operations despite the rulings.

ParniPlus condemned the decision in an online statement, describing it as a further attempt to criminalize LGBTQ visibility, independent journalism, and public solidarity with the community within Russia. This move follows the 2023 ban on what Russian authorities term the “LGBT movement,” a policy widely viewed as part of President Vladimir Putin’s conservative agenda aimed at restricting expressions of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, officials also interrogated employees at one of Russia’s largest publishing houses concerning alleged “LGBT propaganda” found in its book collection, signaling broader efforts to suppress related content.

Human Rights Watch highlighted in March that Russian authorities are exploiting the judicial system to marginalize and silence LGBT individuals and their allies, flagrantly violating fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, association, and protection against discrimination.
