Somalia Secures $900M Deal for 24 Pakistan JF-17 Fighter Jets

Somalia has entered into a significant agreement with Pakistan to purchase 24 JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets, with the deal valued at approximately $900 million. This acquisition represents one of Somalia’s largest military procurements since the Cold War era, as the country aims to rebuild its air force and bolster its coastal defense.

Notably, the agreement includes comprehensive support such as pilot training, weapons integration, and long-term maintenance services. It is expected that foreign funding may assist in facilitating the deal. The JF-17 Block III is a 4.5-generation multi-role fighter equipped with advanced avionics, an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, and capabilities for beyond-visual-range combat.

In recent weeks, Somali delegations conducted negotiations in Islamabad before finalizing the contract. This acquisition is anticipated to decrease Somalia’s dependence on external air support and strengthen its ability to confront militant groups like al-Shabaab.

Analysts suggest that this development could alter the strategic balance in the Horn of Africa by providing Somalia with enhanced control over its national security and airspace, marking a significant step in the country’s military modernization efforts.
