Iran Reopens Strait of Hormuz, Trump Welcomes Move Amid Tensions

Iran declared the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, ending over a month of maritime restrictions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described this as a major step linked to ongoing regional ceasefire agreements.

Araghchi confirmed that the strategic waterway, crucial for global oil shipments, is now fully accessible again. This decision coincides with the ceasefire in Lebanon and will remain effective for the duration of the agreement. Commercial vessels are permitted to resume normal transit through the strait, although they must adhere to designated Iranian shipping lanes while passing through.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply is transported. Its closure had raised global concerns amid escalating regional conflicts, triggering fears of disruptions to energy markets.

Iran’s earlier restrictions on maritime traffic had intensified tensions and contributed to volatility in global oil prices. The reopening signals a potential reduction in pressure on this critical shipping route, though the pace of full normalization remains uncertain.

In a notable response, U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged Iran’s announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, expressing thanks for the strait being “fully open and ready for full passage” after weeks of heightened tensions.

Following the announcement, oil prices experienced a sharp decline. Brent crude futures fell approximately 8 percent to $91 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped to $86 per barrel. This price adjustment reflected eased concerns over supply disruptions through one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

Market analysts noted that the reopening helped reduce the risk premiums that had been incorporated into oil prices during the period of restricted access. The strait handles about one-fifth of global oil trade, and any threat to its accessibility typically causes immediate impacts on energy markets worldwide.

In recent weeks, oil prices had surged amid fears of escalating conflict in the Middle East, with traders closely monitoring developments around the strait and regional ceasefire efforts. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz thus represents a significant development in stabilizing global energy supplies.
