Barcelona Presidential Candidate Urges Messi to Clarify Controversial Remarks Ahead of Vote

In the lead-up to Barcelona’s highly anticipated presidential election, one of the two challengers opposing the current president Joan Laporta has publicly urged Lionel Messi to come forward and clarify recent statements made by former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez. The election, which will see club members known as “socis” cast their votes this Sunday, has been thrown into uncertainty following Hernandez’s explosive remarks suggesting that Laporta deliberately prevented Messi’s potential comeback to the club in 2023 due to concerns over a power struggle within the club’s hierarchy.

Victor Font, who is campaigning to succeed Laporta, expressed his hope that Messi would break his silence before the election day. Speaking on Tuesday, Font emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that he wishes Messi would “tell the truth” so that the socis can make an informed decision rather than being swayed by what he described as a “smoke screen of hope” fostered by Laporta’s camp, particularly through the influence of coach Hansi Flick and the promising young talents on the team. Font’s comments highlight the growing tension and division within the club as the election approaches, with Messi’s position and legacy remaining a pivotal issue for many voters.

It is worth noting that Messi’s relationship with Barcelona has been a rollercoaster in recent years. After a legendary tenure spanning from 2003 to 2021, during which he became the club’s all-time top scorer and a global football icon, Messi left for Paris Saint-Germain in a move that shocked fans worldwide. There was widespread speculation that Messi might return to Barcelona in 2023, especially after reports suggested an informal agreement had been reached following his departure from PSG. However, in a surprising turn, Messi opted to sign with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, a decision that sparked further debate about the internal dynamics at Barcelona.

Joan Laporta has defended Messi’s decision to join Inter Miami by attributing it to the player’s desire to avoid the intense spotlight that comes with European football, a choice reportedly influenced by Messi’s father, Jorge Messi. Contrarily, Xavi Hernandez accused Laporta of blocking Messi’s return out of fear of a “war” or power conflict between the club president and the football superstar. Hernandez went as far as to accuse Laporta of dishonesty regarding the circumstances surrounding Messi’s departure and potential return, casting a shadow over the president’s credibility just days before the election.

Laporta’s initial election in 2021 was heavily influenced by his promise to retain Messi at the club, a pledge that ultimately went unfulfilled when Messi moved to PSG. This broken promise remains a sore point among many Barcelona supporters and has become a central theme in the current election campaign. The upcoming vote is therefore not just about choosing a president but also about the future direction of the club and how it manages its relationship with its most iconic player. As the socis prepare to head to the polls, the Messi saga continues to loom large, with many hoping that the truth behind these conflicting narratives will finally come to light.
