Villarreal Edges Elche to Maintain Pressure on Atletico Madrid in La Liga Race

Villarreal managed a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Elche on Sunday, a result that keeps them firmly in contention alongside Atletico Madrid for the coveted third spot in La Liga. With Atletico having secured a win against Real Sociedad the previous day, the Yellow Submarine, currently fourth in the standings, matched Atletico’s tally by reaching 54 points. This victory is crucial as the season approaches its final stages, with both teams vying for European qualification.

The match saw Villarreal take control early on, with Tajon Buchanan and Santiago Mourino both finding the net in the first half to reward their side’s dominant display. Their goals reflected Villarreal’s attacking intent and tactical discipline under coach Marcelino Garcia Toral. However, despite their strong start, Villarreal’s defense was tested late in the game when Andre Silva pulled a goal back for Elche, injecting tension into the closing minutes and forcing the hosts to hold their nerve until the final whistle.

Reflecting on the match, Mourino admitted that Villarreal’s performance dipped after the 70th minute, allowing Elche to mount pressure. “We relaxed a bit, and until the 70th minute, we were controlling the game. After that, we had to endure a tough finish, which is something we need to avoid in future matches,” he said. This moment of vulnerability highlighted the need for greater concentration as Villarreal aims to maintain their push for a Champions League spot.

Throughout the first half, Villarreal created numerous scoring opportunities, but Elche’s goalkeeper Matias Dituro was instrumental in keeping the scoreline respectable. Dituro made several impressive saves to deny key Villarreal attackers Nicolas Pepe and Georges Mikautadze, preventing the score from widening early on. Despite these efforts, Elche struggled to find their rhythm and were unable to capitalize on counterattacks.

Elche’s season started on a promising note, but their form has dipped significantly in 2026. They have yet to register a win this year, particularly struggling away from home, which has seen them slide down the table to 17th place—just a single point above the relegation zone. Andre Silva expressed frustration after the game, noting that the team’s morale dropped after conceding the opening goal. “I believe that with a little more time, we could have equalized. We ended the match playing the way we should have from the start,” Silva commented. “Letting in that first goal affected our confidence, and that’s something we cannot afford.”

Looking ahead, the La Liga weekend continued with Real Betis, currently fifth, preparing to face Getafe later on Sunday. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Barcelona, who lead the league, reinforced their position at the summit by defeating Athletic Bilbao 1-0. This win extended their lead over Real Madrid to four points, intensifying the battle at the top of the table as the season progresses.
