Misbah and Sarfaraz Appointed to Pakistan Men’s Cricket Selection Panel

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced significant changes to its national men’s cricket selection committee, introducing two former captains, Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed, to the panel. This update follows the unexpected resignation of Aleem Dar, the former elite umpire who had recently joined the committee. The PCB’s official website now lists a refreshed four-member selection panel comprising Misbah, Sarfaraz, former fast bowler Aqib Javed, and ex-Test batsman Asad Shafiq, signaling a new direction in the team’s selection strategy.

Aleem Dar’s departure from the selection committee came after a relatively short tenure, having been appointed on October 11, 2024. His exit has sparked discussions within cricketing circles, especially given his reputation as a multiple-time ICC Umpire of the Year. Reports suggest that Dar’s decision to step down was influenced by internal disagreements during recent selection meetings, where he reportedly felt marginalized in the decision-making process. Such dynamics appear to have created friction, ultimately leading to his resignation.

It is worth noting that Dar’s role as a selector was met with high expectations, considering his extensive experience and respected status in international cricket. However, sources indicate that he was particularly vocal in opposing the inclusion of key players like Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, and Usman Khan in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. His stance reportedly stemmed from concerns over the current form and consistency of these players, which he believed did not justify their selection at this stage.

Moreover, Dar was a strong advocate for wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan, urging the committee to offer him continued support despite fluctuations in his recent performances. He argued that if the management was prepared to back other players who were struggling with form, Rizwan deserved equal consideration and opportunities to prove himself. This perspective, however, seemed to clash with the views of other committee members, contributing to the tensions within the panel.

The inclusion of Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed brings a wealth of leadership experience and strategic insight to the selection committee. Both former captains have a deep understanding of Pakistan cricket’s evolving landscape and are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s future. Alongside seasoned figures like Aqib Javed and Asad Shafiq, the revamped committee aims to balance youth and experience while making decisions that align with Pakistan’s long-term cricketing goals.

As the PCB prepares for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the selection committee’s decisions will be under close scrutiny from fans and experts alike. The reshuffle highlights the board’s commitment to refining its selection process and ensuring that the national team is equipped with the best possible talent and leadership. Moving forward, the cricketing fraternity will be watching closely to see how this new committee navigates the challenges of team selection and player management in the highly competitive international arena.
