Kremlin Confirms Iran Has Not Sought Military Support from Russia Amid Middle East Tensions

In the wake of escalating military actions in the Middle East, the Kremlin clarified on Thursday that Iran has not sought any form of military assistance from Russia. This statement comes amid heightened tensions following a series of airstrikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets last week. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the media during a routine briefing, emphasizing that no formal requests for military support have been received from Tehran.

Adding further context to the situation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov weighed in earlier this week, underscoring Moscow’s position regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Speaking on Tuesday, Lavrov reiterated that Russia has yet to observe any credible evidence indicating that Iran is actively developing nuclear weapons. He described the ongoing conflict in the region as “essentially a war,” highlighting the gravity of the situation while questioning the primary justification cited by the US and Israel for their military actions.

Lavrov warned that the current hostilities might have unintended consequences, potentially driving not only Iran but also its neighboring Arab states to pursue nuclear capabilities. He cautioned that the conflict, which was ostensibly initiated to prevent nuclear proliferation, could ironically accelerate it. This concern reflects broader regional anxieties, as several Gulf countries have recently come under retaliatory fire from Iran, exacerbating fears of a wider arms race in the Middle East.

In a move aimed at reducing tensions, Lavrov engaged in a phone conversation with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. During this call, the Russian foreign minister emphasized the urgent need to protect civilian populations and critical infrastructure throughout the region. The discussion also highlighted Moscow’s commitment to de-escalation and its opposition to the use of force as a means of resolving disputes. This diplomatic outreach follows President Vladimir Putin’s agreement to convey the security concerns of Gulf states affected by the ongoing conflict to Tehran.

Overall, Russia’s stance appears focused on maintaining stability in the Middle East while avoiding direct military involvement. The Kremlin’s public statements serve to reassure the international community that, despite its close ties with Iran, Russia is not currently providing military support amid the recent surge in violence. As the situation continues to evolve, Moscow’s calls for dialogue and restraint underscore the complexities of regional geopolitics and the risks associated with further escalation.
