FIFA 2026: Beiranvand’s Heroics Secure Iran’s Stalemate with Belgium

Inglewood witnessed a tense World Cup Group G encounter on Sunday as Iran managed to hold Belgium to a goalless draw. The match was defined by Iran’s goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who delivered a series of outstanding saves to keep the European side at bay, even after Belgium was reduced to ten players.

The draw leaves both teams level on two points, maintaining an uncertain race for qualification. Although Belgium’s numerical disadvantage following a second-half red card presented Iran with an opportunity, they were unable to capitalize fully. Meanwhile, Belgium lamented missed opportunities to break the deadlock.

The pivotal moment arrived in the 66th minute when Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy received a straight red card for fouling Mehdi Taremi, who had broken through on goal after intercepting a loose pass. Until then, Belgium had largely controlled the game, though clear-cut chances were scarce. Early in the match, striker Romelu Lukaku was booked for a foul on Beiranvand, setting a physical tone for the contest.

Iran briefly believed they had taken the lead just before halftime when Taremi scored from a free-kick routine. However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review flagged an offside infringement.

Despite having the advantage of an extra player for the final 24 minutes, Iran struggled to maintain offensive pressure and were often pinned back as Belgium pushed for a late winner. Beiranvand stood out with several crucial saves, including a remarkable close-range stop against Maxim De Cuyper in the second half. His performance earned him widespread acclaim and the player of the match honor.

Belgium’s coach Rudi Garcia expressed frustration over his team’s failure to convert chances, while Lukaku described the result as “disappointing,” citing a lack of composure in key moments. On the other hand, Iran’s coach Amir Ghalenoei commended his team’s determination, highlighting their spirited performance despite challenging circumstances surrounding the squad during the tournament.
