Former Pakistan international pacer Mohammad Amir has denied reports that he is in the process of registering for the Indian Premier League auction. On Friday, he posted on his official Instagram account: “ALL news of the IPL is fake.”
The reports, picked up by sports analysis outlets and international media, claimed the 34-year-old left-arm pacer had registered for the Afghanistan Premier League draft as a British national. They said he had been issued an Indian passport earlier in 2023 and would follow a route similar to that of former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who played in the IPL while holding a UK passport despite restrictions on Pakistani players.
Amir’s denial and its effect on IPL eligibility
The statement quickly ended discussion about how franchise cricket rules apply to players who gain a different nationality. Acquiring a British passport technically changes a player’s overseas category, but Amir’s denial appears to rule out any near-term chance of him playing in Indian T20 competitions.
Amir remains one of the most popular players on the global T20 circuit, with a large fan base. His clarification is likely to serve as a correction for sports channels and search engines following cricket player movements.
