Mallorca Stuns Real Madrid 2-1, Impacting LaLiga Title Race

Mallorca delivered a significant setback to Real Madrid’s aspirations in the LaLiga title race by clinching a 2-1 victory at their home ground. The match’s decisive moment came in added time when Vedat Muriqi scored the winning goal, propelling Mallorca two points clear of the relegation zone and leaving Real Madrid trailing league leaders Barcelona by four points.

Earlier in the game, Real Madrid appeared dominant, with star players Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler putting pressure on Mallorca’s goalkeeper Leo Roman. Despite this early control, Mallorca struck first when Pablo Maffeo provided a crucial assist to Manu Morlanes, who found the back of the net in the first half. Real Madrid managed to level the score late in the match through a goal by Eder Militao, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

In a significant development, Vedat Muriqi, who had recently faced criticism following Kosovo’s World Cup qualifying defeat, emerged as the hero for Mallorca. His last-gasp goal not only secured a historic win—their first against Real Madrid since February 2023—but also moved him to tears, highlighting the emotional weight of the moment for both the player and the club.

With this result shaking up the LaLiga standings, Real Madrid will now shift their focus to their upcoming Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Mallorca prepares to host Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, aiming to build on their morale-boosting victory. This match underscores the unpredictable nature of the league and the fierce competition Real Madrid faces in their pursuit of the title.
