Lahore is set to host the inauguration of Punjab’s first modern film city on December 15, with preparations for the launch now complete.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb chaired the first meeting of the Punjab Film Authority on Sunday. Members approved several measures meant to revive the local film industry, encourage modern filmmaking and restore Lahore’s status as the country’s cinema centre.

Royalty law, rebate policy and new film facilities

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved drafting Pakistan’s first royalty law for artists and asked that the proposal be presented at the next Film Authority meeting. The meeting also cleared plans for a film and music school, a film trading house, a post-production facility, a studio complex with modern soundstages, and Pakistan’s largest convention center in Punjab.

Marriyum Aurangzeb asked that a film rebate framework be tabled at next week’s meeting. She said the policy would provide financial support to filmmakers and help improve production quality. A single-window online platform will also be launched to help filmmakers pick shooting locations.

Budget, staffing and cinema hall restoration plans

A proposed budget of Rs 589 million for the Film City Authority has been sent to the finance committee for review. The authority approved hiring 26 people against 53 vacant posts in the first phase, with hiring and firing powers resting with the board.

Members also reviewed progress on forming the Punjab Film Fund Committee and six specialised sub-committees. The meeting approved plans to restore old cinema halls, equip them with solar power, introduce online ticketing, and run training for young filmmakers led by international experts.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said Maryam Nawaz wants to make Punjab an international hub for screen tourism within five years, a move that would showcase the province’s culture and heritage to the world.
