Mayor Murtaza Wahab, who also serves as the spokesperson for Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has categorically dismissed circulating reports about Bilawal’s engagement or marriage to a European royal. Wahab labeled these claims as completely false and without any foundation.
The rumors, which emerged on various social media platforms and were echoed by some media outlets, suggested that the 38-year-old PPP leader was set to wed into a European family. Specific posts linked the alleged engagement to Liechtenstein and the former Austrian royal lineage.
Wahab clarified on X that no official announcement has been made by Bilawal or his family regarding any engagement, prospective bride, or wedding date. The speculation intensified following social media claims that President Asif Ali Zardari had traveled to Europe with family members to discuss the marriage and finalize arrangements.
Some narratives identified the supposed bride as residing in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, while others went further, alleging she was a former Austrian princess and a descendant of Karl I, the last emperor of Austria. However, no credible evidence has surfaced to support these assertions.
The rumors initially gained momentum after a post by the social media account South Asia Index described the story as breaking news, claiming Bilawal was to marry a great-great-granddaughter of Karl I, with the wedding potentially taking place in Vienna attended by notable political and social figures. These claims were subsequently repeated by other accounts and local media despite the absence of any confirmation from the PPP or the Zardari family.
The speculation was also linked to President Zardari’s recent private trip abroad. On August 27, the Presidency announced that Zardari had left for a private visit, without revealing the destination or purpose. Some reports conjectured that he traveled to Liechtenstein or Austria to negotiate his son’s marriage, but neither the Presidency nor PPP confirmed any connection between the trip and marriage discussions.
These rumors have rekindled public interest in Bilawal’s earlier statements about marriage. At the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2022, when asked about his marital plans, Bilawal smiled and acknowledged he intended to marry but did not share details or a timeline. In a 2016 interview, he mentioned that any future bride would need to win the approval of his sisters, Aseefa and Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, humorously noting that gaining their favor would be a challenging task.
Born on September 21, 1988, Bilawal is the son of President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. He has served as Pakistan’s foreign minister and currently leads the PPP.
