PPP MPA Calls for Establishment of Saraiki Province in Punjab Assembly

A Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has formally requested the Punjab Assembly to consider the establishment of a distinct Saraiki province. This demand reflects longstanding aspirations among the Saraiki-speaking population for greater political recognition and administrative autonomy within Punjab. Advocates argue that a separate province would address regional disparities and promote focused development in Saraiki-majority areas.

The call for a Saraiki province is rooted in historical, cultural, and linguistic distinctions that differentiate the Saraiki belt from other parts of Punjab. Over the decades, various political groups and civil society organizations have campaigned for this cause, emphasizing the need to preserve the Saraiki language and heritage. The proposal also aims to enhance governance by decentralizing administrative functions and ensuring local representation.

In a significant development, this demand has gained traction within the provincial legislature, potentially influencing future policy discussions. If pursued, the creation of a Saraiki province could reshape Punjab’s political landscape and set a precedent for addressing ethnic and regional demands across Pakistan. Meanwhile, the government faces the challenge of balancing provincial integrity with the aspirations of diverse communities.
