Re-polling Ordered in Gilgit-Baltistan Amid Unrest and Rigging Allegations

The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission has mandated re-polling in several constituencies following violent disturbances, allegations of electoral fraud, and disruptions that compromised the voting process in the region’s recent elections.

Preliminary unofficial results indicate that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leads with 10 seats in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) holds four seats. Independent candidates, some supported by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), have secured seven seats, and the Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) has won one seat.

In a significant development, the Election Commission’s directive for re-polling in critical areas could alter the final distribution of power, despite the apparent prospect of a coalition government between the PPP and PML-N.

Polling has been annulled in two constituencies: GBA-15 Diamer-I and parts of GBA-16, with voters instructed to return to the polls on June 15. In GBA-15 Diamer-I, voting at a female polling station in Loshi/Joshi Thak was invalidated due to severe law and order issues, including stone-throwing and gunfire. The situation worsened repeatedly during polling hours, resulting in multiple suspensions and preventing many voters from casting their ballots.

Similarly, in GBA-16, polling at three stations—Gechi, Thor Khaya, and BHU Thor Seri—was cancelled amid reports of irregularities and procedural violations. Fresh elections at these locations are scheduled for June 15 alongside GBA-15.

The Election Commission’s decision follows complaints of rigging and voter disenfranchisement, with authorities investigating claims of misconduct at several polling sites. These developments coincide with ongoing political negotiations for government formation in the region.

Notably, the PPP and PML-N are reportedly engaged in talks to establish a coalition government, with the PPP anticipated to assume the chief minister’s role and the PML-N likely to be offered the governorship. Discussions also include a proposed 60:40 ratio for cabinet positions.
